Meteorological devices containing numerous packages of cigarettes have disrupted flights in Lithuania, as Vilnius Airport was compelled to shut down for several hours when dozens of them entered the airspace of Lithuania.
Flight Disruptions
The temporary shutdown led to the cancellation of 30 flights disrupting 6,000 passengers, with authorities cautioning that additional delays could occur throughout Monday.
Law Enforcement Actions
Officials confirmed that 25 meteorological balloons were observed crossing into Lithuania from the adjacent country of Belarus, with two balloons ending up right above the airport's airspace.
Up to 14 of the weather balloons launched over the weekend floated over the capital region, which is home to Lithuania's primary metropolis and near the frontier with Belarus.
Smuggled Items Retrieved
A minimum of 11 balloons carrying 18,000 packs of contraband smoking materials have since been recovered, though additional discoveries are expected, according to border security officials.
Regional Smuggling Pattern
Despite the disruption, officials emphasized that "Balloons with contraband - Belarusian smoking products - are common occurrences in the Baltic region and Poland."
To date in the current year, 544 balloons have been recorded entering Lithuania from Belarus, while 966 were noted during the prior year.
Cross-Border Effects
Meanwhile, the north-eastern Polish territory, which likewise adjoins Belarus, has recorded more than 100 cases in which smuggled items were delivered from its neighbor using the balloons.
Smuggling Techniques
In response to questions about why criminals use a approach that remains highly susceptible to weather elements rather than easier to manage drones, authorities explained that "Meteorological balloons are basic instruments used by illegal traders - they are more economical than drones for transporting cigarettes from Belarus."
Security Service Goals
Representatives further stated that "Our services' aim is to seize the largest possible volumes of smuggled items and to arrest masterminds and participants so that such operations become not financially viable and present no risk to commercial air travel."
International Concerns
Such border infiltrations occur during an era marked by heightened tension in Europe following various aerial device infiltrations that have caused air traffic disruption across the continent.
Recent incidents in neighboring countries have caused EU officials to speed up talks about enhancing aerial security throughout European airspace.
