Fresh analysis suggests that patients who come off blockbuster GLP-1 drugs like Wegovy and Mounjaro may regain reduced body mass far faster than those who end conventional lifestyle plans.
Findings released in a major medical journal demonstrates that while overweight people often shed about a fifth of their body weight while using the jabs, the weight comes back at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month upon discontinuation.
"Individuals using such drugs need to be informed of the risk of quick weight regain when the medication is stopped," stated expert Dr. Susan Jebb.
This pace of recovery implies a reversion to starting mass within about 18 months.
Comparing Treatments
The research, which looked at 37 of trials involving over 9,000 of participants, compared the effects of these new drugs with conventional dieting.
The team emphasize that individuals who shed pounds through lifestyle changes alone typically experience a less rapid creep back—approximately 0.1 kg a month—after stopping.
Explaining the Fast Rebound
Doctors propose the mechanism of the injections explains the amplified rebound.
The injections copy a natural hormone called GLP-1, which moderates appetite.
"Sustained high doses of GLP-1 levels far above than the body's typical production may cause the system to generate a reduced amount of its own natural GLP-1, and could reduce responsiveness to its effects," said Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics researcher.
"Stopping of this GLP-1 'fix' results in appetite is uncontrolled, making binge eating much more probable."
A Lifelong Condition?
Health authorities advise the jabs for people with weight-linked health risks, accompanied by prescribed diet and exercise modifications.
Professionals contend that, due to the likelihood of relapse, the therapy might need to be ongoing.
This perspective is echoed by pharmaceutical companies, who note that the results "highlight the chronic character of excess weight," comparing it to managing conditions like diabetes.
User Experiences
People who have discontinued the jabs explain a intense resurgence of cravings.
"It felt as if something flipping and I was suddenly starving," said one woman.
The struggle is worsened if users have not adopted sustainable lifestyle or habit changes during treatment.
Widespread Use
Survey data show that millions of adults in the UK have used these injections in the last 12 months, with demand continuing to grow.
- Use is higher among women than men.
- The 40s and 50s age group shows the highest usage rates.
- Many access the drugs through private healthcare rather than the NHS.
Ultimately, researchers caution that while GLP-1 drugs are potent tools for shedding pounds, they are not a standalone fix and lasting health benefits relies on ongoing lifestyle support.
