EU Might Retaliate to ‘Unwarranted’ US Travel Restrictions, Spokesperson States

The EU might “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it deems “unjustified” visa bans imposed by the US against five European individuals involved in combating digital hatred and disinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.

EU Officials Decry US Move as ‘Coercion’

Officials from Europe including Emmanuel Macron accused the US administration of “bullying and threats”, following the travel bans targeted figures that were central to efforts to introduce laws regulating American tech companies.

“For too long, ideologues in Europe have led coordinated campaigns to coerce US companies to punish US perspectives they disagree with,” stated the US secretary of state online. “This government will no longer tolerate such actions of censorship beyond its borders.”

Broad Criticism From EU Nations

Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives supported the French president in criticizing the move.

The restrictions were enacted this week against a former EU commissioner involved in crafting the EU’s digital governance law, along with several anti-disinformation campaigners, including Germany and the United Kingdom.

A Deepening Dispute Over Regulation

This European legislation is seen by Washington as a type of speech restriction, whereas European leaders argue the rules are essential to control inflammatory language and falsehoods.

This disagreement threatens to become part of a much broader existing political and ideological clash between Washington and European institutions.
