A minimum of 13 passengers killed and ninety-eight hurt in train derailment in Mexico.

A tragic train derailment in the southern state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite opposition criticisms regarding the pace and handling of the country's major infrastructure initiatives.

The crash happened on the Interoceanic Train, a rail link built to connect the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific Ocean across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was intended to offer an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving economic development in the area.

“We will meticulously determine what caused this accident,” declared the head of state.

The official reported that, of the approximately 250 people on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in grave condition. The official added plans to visit Oaxaca to speak with those affected.

Flagship Project of Past Leadership

The Interoceanic Train was a central public works project of the immediate past president, whose term finished the prior year. This venture was a hallmark of his government's strategic agenda for the southern region.

Another multi-billion dollar train initiative from that time, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the comprehensive effort to revitalize the economic fortunes of a historically disadvantaged part of the country.

Construction Oversight and Worries

The construction of both train projects was supervised by the nation's military, marking a notable growth of its responsibilities in civilian projects. They were built at an accelerated speed, beating forecasts to be partially opened before the end of that administration.

However, this fast-paced schedule had simultaneously sparked ongoing apprehensions over operational security.

  • Sunday's crash was the third event on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
  • This encompasses an prior collision this month when a train hit a truck at a crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also seen a couple of non-lethal derailments.

Calls for Review and Suspension

In the wake of the tragedy, the leader of a key rival party called for an urgent pause in the construction and operation of all such projects.

This pause was requested while awaiting a thorough safety audit. The party stated that the situation "calls for swift accountability."

In response, the head of state maintained that the train had been functioning in complete compliance with all operational standards. Assurances were given that the government would remain "diligent" in both the construction and running of these vital undertakings.
